6 SKY SAILOR March | April 2021 It wasn’t on, then it was on, then it wasn’t as big, but still on… Covid was messing with the new organisers, the Western Victorian Hang Gliding Club. Initially, 57 pilots were coming then, at the last minute, the plague returned to NSW and those living in the petri dish weren’t allowed to play in the mountains, on the border of NSW or Victoria. We ended up with 37 pilots, mostly from Victoria, some from South Australia, and one from Queensland. Ollie did a very rushed dash through the state of pestilence to attend. Sterling effort! The weather was playing the game. Including practice day, the first five days were 9500ft-plus days. Many of the newer pilots to competition flying achieved PBs in height, time in the air, and distance covered. The bulk of the flyers and their families stayed at Colac Colac caravan park which certainly helped in organising people and activities. As one of the organisers, we spent the first day in Corry- ong driving around to various properties to locate landing paddocks, as it’s preferred that we don’t land on the airport now due to the possibility of fire fighting aircraft needing the space. Many of the farmers talked of their experience with the bushfires that came through Corryong, how they dealt with the blazes, the recovery, and help they were given.
