22 SKY SAILOR March | April 2021 With 11 years of flying under his belt, as well as instructor certification, Tasmanian-based paraglider pilot, Ramon Brasnja is determined to open the first flight school in Tasmania. There are approximately 50 paragliding flight schools around Australia, however, Tasmania is the only state that does not have full flight training facilities for student interested in taking up the sport. Ramon is a volunteer Senior Safety Officer for the Tasma- nian Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association, which is the sport’s only member organisation for the state. He believes there would be demand for a flight school to be opened up alongside the club. Ramon has been working as a second instructor with two flight schools in Bright, Victoria – Active Flight and Bright Flight – to help him realise his dream. “In Tasmania I have been approved and am running tandem operations as a satellite school and hope to open as a full flight training facility in the future.” Ramon said. It has not been easy for Ramon with a family of his own, a full-time job and Covid-19 hitting, and he admits that this dream of running a flight school in Tasmania has taken its fair share of hits. However, now restrictions are easing, Ramon is able to continue his training and fly back to Bright in Victoria to complete the next licence course with Active Flight.
