Ruth Jessop Sunshine Coast Sports Aviators Ultralight Emergency Landing: A trike conducted an emergency landing on Teewah beach on Sunday 27 January. The pilot was very experienced, was carrying a passenger and was forced to land following an engine failure. The cause of the failure is under investigation. Both pilot and passenger are well. The trike landed just short of the sand and the pilot is to be complimented for his reaction to the unfortunate event. Playgrounds: The property’s managing owner has advised that this site is now closed. Gerard’s Lookout: The site is now officially open to be used by PGs. The landowner has kindly agreed to allow us to launch and land on his private land: ➲➲ This site is rated as suitable for supervised PG2 and above. However, top landing is rated as PG4 – extreme care is needed when top landing. ➲➲ Mandatory site briefing prior to flying this site. Contact the club/SOs for detailed information. This site is in the public eye, be respectful and professional towards spectators and the land owners – use of this site is a privilege, not a right. Paul Green, President Icarus Trophy 2019 – Brazil The Icarus Trophy is a whole new breed of air race – man and machine vs the skies. A near 1000 mile adventure where pilots fly across some of the most challenging terrain on the planet. In 2019 we’re upping the adventure with a north- south racecourse in Western Brazil, launching in Nova Mutum in Mato Grosso and finishing in Bonito in Mato Grosso do Sul. Fuel drops plus ground and air support with light aircraft on emergency standby make this racecourse possible. Two extra checkpoints take Race Division pilots further west, while Adventure pilots will take on a difficult and remote route. Pre-race training: 30 September and 1 October 2019. Race launch: 2 October2019. Prizegiving: 10 October 2019. [www.icarustrophy.com ] News Mentor 6 Photo: www.nova.eu Letter to the Editor Thank you so much for the article ‘The Elephant in the Sky’ It really resounded with me, and I am that person who envies others out there flying and looks at their epic flights and, yes, I feel as though I’m always missing out because my circumstances are different to those others out there and my opportunities to fly are a lot less. They might have partners at home to take care of the stuff that needs doing whilst they go flying – I’m the opposite of that, it’s all up to me – and I work. So, thank you for putting this article up, I felt a little more normal after reading it as I am constantly disappointed by the weather and wind and as I’m time poor, when I can fly (when I have time) it’d be nice to be rewarded but, alas, I’m usually let down by circumstances and this really does play with you psychologically. I often think what I could have done with the $4500 on the set up of all my gear, etc instead of sitting in a bag in the corner of my spare room which further disappoints me. I placed a post on our local facebook page and encouraged others to not only read the article, but really absorb the information in there and that not everyone can just go out and fly at the drop of a hat cause the wind is right.
