SKY SAILOR 5 September | October 2018 The winner of the day was in Fun Class (yes Fun Class!) with an amazing flight of 251km to Walgett by Ed Weare on his EN-B glider, beating all the Comp, XC and Sports Classes on the day! It shows that route selection can often be far more important than glider selection. 1 Ed Weare Chili4 251km 2 Nick Pain Sigma10 247km 3 Xavier Girin Zeno 226km XC Class: Jason Turner BGD Lynx 214km 4 February, Day 9: Unofficial Bonus Day Sunday was looking like another big one, so the Presentation at HQ was held at 9am to allow the XC km-chasers to get up Mt Borah and fly a record or PB. They weren’t disappointed. The day was similar to the previous, but with more consistent wind and less overshadowing on the NW route past Moree to land at sunset. The other route went via Narrabri and Walgett. It was close for another site record west of Lightening Ridge, but a lack of roads stopped Godfrey’s flight at 7pm with over an hour still to fly. Over 110 Personal Best (PB) flights were noted in all classes during the six out of eight days of XC flying. The site record was broken with a 10-hour flight of 371km (391km via three TPs). The pilots collectively flew 32,640km – without an accident reported. It was a tight week for places in all the classes, only 37km separated the top three overall once the best five of six flown days were counted. In the end, a veteran XC Class pilot, Jason Turner of Canungra (QLD), flew consistently all week to narrowly win with a margin of just 8km from Comp Class pilot Airie Juvan (VIC). Comp class pilots were in the next three places. Best in Sport Class, Phil Mansell from Dubbo (NSW), had an excellent result coming 5th overall. In the hotly contested Fun Class, winner Ed Weare from the UK came 21st overall, edging out some local Fun Class pilots with his epic Day 8 flight.
