20 SKY SAILOR May | June 2020 The Passing of Phil Sjostrom Phil started hang gliding in 1976 and was the Official FAI Observer for the first 100 mile flight in Australia, along the Great Australian Bight, in the late 1970s. by Paul Kelley I n hang gliding circles, his main claim to fame was the design and manufacture of a series of variometer/altimeter combos which bore his surname and were the instrument of choice for many hang glider pilots throughout the 1980s and 90s. Phil was diagnosed with Mesothelioma about 20 months ago, and finally succumbed to complica- tions of the disease on Sunday the 22 March 2020. After his diagnosis he purchased a Fun 190 and re-joined SAHPGA in an attempt to get some airtime after a long hiatus, but only managed a couple of flights before he became too ill. Phil is survived by his four children. Rest in Peace. At Teewah, QLD Photo: Paul Reilly Supervised 100-hour Rotax 912UL(S) services A s a result of feedback from a recent SA/ Rotax Maintenance Course survey, we have decided to run supervised Rotax Service days, on request. So, when the current crisis has run its course and the travel restrictions are lifted, Kev and I would be willing to show anyone how to conduct a 912 UL(S)100hr/annual Rotax service on their own aircraft, at no charge, as long as it is within a reasonable driving distance of our location. Rotax stipulate that the service can be com- pleted within +/-10 hours and +/- two months of the due date. Those who have completed our course will know that is better to do your service later rather than sooner, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to arrange a date within this time frame. The owner will have to purchase and supply all necessary parts from Bert Floods, but we will bring the tools and supervise the work and subsequent logbook entries. A tie-down for the aircraft, to complete the carb-sync and ground run and a container to dispose of the used oil, will also be required. This will be for the engine service only and will not include any maintenance for the airframe and/ or wing.
