SKY SAILOR 15 May | June 2020 Further round, the fires came up from the Lake Buffalo area to devastate the western end of the North Buffalo plateau, particularly up around Anderson Peak. The rocky slopes here on the sunny side are reliable thermal triggers, now even better with reduced tree cover. Once past Nug Nug and back into the Buffalo creek and Ovens valley there are no signs of the fires and the chalet remains. Although it is still deteriorating due to its lack of use and its future remains uncertain, it dodged the bullet this time. Since the middle of February (and the middle of the Bright Open) North East Victoria has produced an almost continuous stream of good flying days. It’s as if the weather is trying to make up for the extreme conditions it delivered earlier in the year. Unfortunately Covid-19 is nowmaking it difficult to even get to sites with restricted car pooling and travel and at the end of March the NEVHGC closed their launches to members in order to comply with the new social distancing rules.
