SKY SAILOR 11 May | June 2018 Day 2 and we are going west to Yorkrakine Rock. It was a struggle with nobody making goal. The day was won by Tony Smith in a Fun 2 flying 87km and beating all the topless pilots. I crossed paths with Tony a few times during my flight. I finally got out ahead of him only to deck it and watch him fly on while I packed up my glider. Day 3, and they tell me Marvel Loch is nice this time of year. I like Marvel Loch, I’ve goaled at Marvel Loch a couple of times in recent years, but 2018 was not going to be it – I bombed. The day was won by Vic Hare with Jeremy Schieb and Michael Cassells coming second and third. Six pilots were in goal and Tony in his Fun landed only two kilometres short. Day 4 and its back to Bonny Rock. This time Gary Wright was the only pilot in goal, Mick Gibberd and Michael Cassells were close. Mick had good height and an easy glide to goal. He decided he didn’t need his GPS and glided to the largest nicest looking rock around which turned out not to be Bonny Rock. He landed out in tiger country and his team had a long retrieve. Mick earned the ‘Boguki Award’ for this effort – awarded to pilots who get most lost. Day 5, the last day, and we are off toWelbudding. Gary Wright won the day by a whole 40 seconds from Michael Cassells. Mark Stokoe also made goal and on his birthday. Tony Smith made goal again, securing his position at the top of the Sport Class. The Results Michael Cassels took out the first place in the Open Class in only his third year of competing in the WA comps. He took home the voucher for free entry at 2019 Forbes. Second place went to Gary Wright and third place to Vic Hare. The Sport Class champion is Tony Smith ahead of Bevan Taylor and Claudio Rodina.
