SKY SAILOR 11 March | April 2018 Murray (Muz) Wood, trike and hang glider pilot extraordinaire Rob MacFarlane getting ready for the first flight in his newly acquired C4 ➲➲ The point where Bevan ceased being a novice pilot and became Muz’s play-thing at the end of the rope. ➲➲ Realising that 50 is not too old for this and there are plenty of older hangies out there doing fine. Special thanks to Simon Shuttleworth and Peter Roberts who freely and patiently gave their time all week and ran the course in a safe and fun learning environment. You guys are playing a big part in keeping this great sport alive. Thanks also to Alan and Tanya Wilmott for generously letting us use their magnificent farm and facilities. Also, a big thank you to Kaitlin Willmott for giving up her cottage to a bunch of crusty old hangies for a week. On my final (15th) tow I got what I had come for, and a taste of things to come, I hope. Simon towed me straight into a big fat thermal, waved me off and I spiralled straight up to cloudbase where I was blown away by spectacular views of the Stirling Ranges, lakes and farmland below. I can’t wait ‘til the next time I go aerotowing! Sunrise heralds the arrival of the trike Realising the dream: Google earth tracklog view of my first aerotow thermal amongst spectacular scenery Simon Shuttleworth, Ross Smith and Muz making good use of bad weather
