SKY SAILOR 41 July | August 2019 scream from Australia. I was operated on two days later, back to Tasmania a month after that, I had a realignment in January 2009, a bone graft six months later and a staph infection a week after that. Union of all fractures was finally achieved in November 2011. So, what can be learned from that one? Don’t get impatient. Don’t fly alone. If you drop a brake handle, park it and start your final set-up again with all your lines in the right place. If you have the problem I encountered off launch, don’t panic – look up and clear the problem. Fly your craft – don’t become a frozen, panic-ridden passenger like I did. The overall message Develop good launch skills: The ability to control your wing and launch with the wing fully loaded and fully under control is the skill that needs to be developed before taking on sketchy launches that are steep, full of hazards, and with less than optimal wind direction/strength. All’s well that ends well. I lost a career at sea, but went on to uni and came away from that well. And I met my wife. Now I am back flying, having done it the right way by going and doing a course with a great school in February 2014. Hopefully, my sharing might just have helped somebody else. Fly safe.
