Manilla XC Camp 25 January to 1 February Mt Borah, Manilla NSW. Free event for XC pilots of all levels. Informal distances scored using your choice of online system or straight line Open Distance off your GPS. Come for as many days as you like, fly as far as you can, fly with and learn from some of the best XC pilots. Many pilots achieve PBs in Manilla each year. Mt Borah has four astro-turfed launches for nearly all wind directions, easy landings. The area offers some of the world’s safest XC flying for all pilot levels (from nov with some thermalling experience). Daily weather briefings, tips and trick sessions, campfire discussions, regular day prizes and scoring updates in all classes (Fun/Sport/ Serial). Open Class gliders welcome, but won’t be scored. February Bright Open 8 to 14 February Bright, VIC. AAA/FAI Cat 2 sanction. Home to punchy thermals, big triangles, treed ridges and some of the best alpine racing in Australia. Daily weather briefings, mentoring program, task analysis and Wally’s famous ‘Horse Race’, plus a few social events as well. The Flow Corryong PG Open 16 to 22 February Corryong, VIC. Held at Mt Elliot, the Corryong Open is a high level, SAFA sanctioned, AAA/Cat2 comp, the final AAA event of the Australian season, with 450 ladder points available. It’s aimed at experienced inland intermediate to advanced rated pilots. Pilots need to arrange their own retrieve drivers. Experience the thrill of flatlands XC and challenge yourself with GPS navigation around modest comp tasks. Cost: $530 p/p, includes: Shared room in a rustic farm house in Corryong with views of Mt Elliot (launch), all retrieves. Participants will be self-catering and expected to share meal duties. Requirements: Int/ Adv rating with aerotow endorsement, current SAFA membership (Temporary membership for overseas pilots), experience in XC aerotow in thermic conditions, GPS (incl. download cables), VHF Radio Operators License and VHF radio. Entry fee: $600, incl. the famous Dalby Big Air T-shirt, presentation dinner and all aerotow fees for comp and practice day. Competition places are capped at 60 pilots, so get in early! A $100 non-refundable deposit is required upon registration. Pilots who have not paid the deposit will not go on the Pilot List until the deposit is received. Hang glider pilots are invited to the 28th Flatter than the Flatlands cross-country towing competition. The event will be conducted over the four-day Easter long weekend. Entry fee is $80 and includes daily prizes, presentation BBQ, scoring, goal beers and lots of fun. GPS and parachute required. Discount available for teams with a first time pilot. This SAFA C sanction comp is a great way for Novices (PG2/3) to get into competition and XC flying in a fun and safe way. It’s about the promotion of skills and safety. The comp is based on ‘Flying Crews’ (5 pilot teams, 1 PG5, 2 PG2/3 plus 2 other pilots) – so get your crew together. Handicapping is used for scoring. Fee: $30.
